Last Minute World Book Day ideas

There are many special observance days within the year. In March alone, we have International Women’s Day, Science Week, Easter, World Poetry Day, World Water day as well as World Book Day.

As a teacher, I know how tricky it is to get activities for these events. So for you, (and for me mainly too) I have compiled some activities for each of our books. Feel free to take some of these ideas and adapt, remember to share what you come up with.

My Sister The Super Speedy Racer

For our first book, we cover adventure themes and everyday journeys gone wrong story.

Doing a read a long as a class will be fun. With all the onomatopoeic words and repetition. You could have the class go around the school building and playground pretending to be Kofi and his dad, don’t forget to cry baby Ama.

For older children you can get them to write about an everyday journey gone wrong.

The Frimpong’s Trip of Return

This book will pair brilliantly with any travel topic or study of African countries. Children can look at diaries and journal writing and create their own travel diaries like Kofi. Children can elevate their diary with pictures and clippings to show their experiences.

In the book, there is a snippets on the origin of cultural traditions like the Kente cloth, naming of babies and where chocolate comes from. You can get children to research the origins of other cultural traditions.

Mummy’s Little Helper

Food, Food, Food is all I can suggest for this one. In our school, we are currently creating a book of recipes from families within the school. Groups of children are coming together to edit and publish these pages on Canva and they are learning about how publish my books and what it means to be editors.

Other activities can include writing poems about favourite food using onomatopoeia and repetition to bring across their love for their food.
